Lagavulin 12 Year Old Official Limited Edition 2012 Bottling
Bottle #ラガヴーリン(LAGAVULIN)
This series was not only delicious in the 2011 bottling.
Lagavulin LAGAVULIN 12yo OB LIMITED EDITION 56.1% Bottled in 2012
The aroma features fresh citrus, with apricot jam, orange, good barley notes, and a strong peat character with iodine-like qualities. The fish stock dashi is evident. On the palate, it has a robust mouthfeel with richness, apricot jam, nuts, slightly concentrated citrus, a balanced sweetness and saltiness, with a lingering smoky peat.
[Good/Very Good]
Lagavulin's official 12-year-old limited edition is bottled annually at cask strength, and this is the 2012 bottling. The aroma carries a fresh citrus character with subtle barley notes, revealing gentle apricot jam and orange undertones. The strong peat and dashi-like nuances typical of Islay are clearly present.
Upon tasting, the initial attack is somewhat robust, but the sweetness of apricot jam and concentrated citrus notes are clearly felt, creating a rich experience. The boldness characteristic of Islay cask strength expressions was well present.
This is a highly satisfying Islay cask strength whisky that fully embodies Lagavulin's identity. I previously wrote about the 2011 and 2013 bottlings, making this one an intervening vintage. Unlike the youthful 2013 bottling, this has a closer impression to the 2011 version. However, compared to the 2011 bottling, which felt more refined with stronger concentration and complexity, I rated the 2011 as Very Good (VG) and this bottling as Good/Very Good (G/VG).
Nevertheless, this 2012 bottling is undoubtedly delicious. If available at its original release price, it would be a highly cost-effective malt.
