New Release: Laphroaig 15 Year Old Official 200th Anniversary Bottle, UK Distribution
Bottle #ラフロイグ(LAPHROAIG)
Generally reassuring common nuances.
Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 15yo OB TO CELEBRATE THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF LAPHROAIG 43% UK Distribution Bottle
The aroma features grapefruit rind, passion fruit, faint peach and pear, followed by apricot jam, vanilla, a subtle creaminess, a moderate barley note from the depth, strong peat with some seaweed character. On the palate, it starts with a gentle mouthfeel, moderate viscosity but with a slightly chewy concentration. The flavors mirror the aroma—strong, diverse fruits and peat, seaweed-like notes, a robust fruity sweetness with refined elegance, umami from seafood dashi. The finish is long and intoxicating.

This official 15-year-old bottling commemorates Laphroaig Distillery's 200th anniversary (bicentennial). Although I previously wrote about the 'Friends of Laphroaig' version released earlier and was greatly impressed, this UK-distributed bottle has now become available. This particular bottle was recently purchased from London's Whisky Exchange. As mentioned earlier, I was slightly anxious about potential flavor differences due to different cask lots, so I approached tasting with some trepidation. As before, I conducted two thorough tastings—immediately after opening and later—and the tasting notes were largely consistent. *Interestingly, during the first tasting, it initially seemed slightly rustic compared to the FoL version, but on the second occasion, it delivered exactly the expected flavor. I believe this difference was due to condition rather than content.* Given that it's likely a vatting from similar casks, I had expected roughly the same flavor profile. This time too, it was deliciously reassuring. With over 70,000 bottles produced in total, and Laphroaig being a Suntory-owned distillery, a reasonable quantity is likely to circulate within Japan as well. If there's minimal variation between cask lots, it would be more cost-effective to purchase the UK version domestically rather than striving to buy internationally. As a Laphroaig enthusiast, I hope this flavor can be enjoyed widely.
