Laphroaig 1969 19yo Sestante 40%
Bottle #ラフロイグ(LAPHROAIG)
This was the best-conditioned bottle among all I've encountered.
Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1969 19yo SESTANTE 40%
The aroma offers a pleasant old-world character with plums, orange, faint melon and ham, caramel and vanilla, aged oak, lively barley notes, a briny seafood stock quality with a hint of oyster, and a robust old peat character with iodine, smoke from extinguished fire, and strong earthy tones.
On the palate, it begins with a smooth mouthfeel, unfolding into slightly dried orange, faintly ripe plums, a rich sweetness, oyster umami, nuts, a touch of minerals, and a long-lasting strong peat character with presence.
The Sestante Laphroaig ship label, 1969 vintage aged for 19 years.
The old-world character in both aroma and flavor is pleasant, with subtle sherry nuances in the plums, caramel, orange, faint melon, and surprisingly lively barley notes. The seaweed stock-like quality typical of Islay malts and the iodine-rich peat characteristic of Laphroaig are clearly present.
The sweetness has depth, the umami is rich, and the peat remains strong. As a watered-down old whisky, it retains considerable intensity.
While I've tasted many bottles of this ship label (including other vintages), I often encountered poorly conditioned ones despite their high price.
I thought the previous bottle I reviewed was in good condition, but this one is particularly refined and represents the best condition I've seen so far.
The melon-and-ham nuance I previously associated with this label isn't particularly strong in this bottle, suggesting it may have developed more intensely over time.
While the original flavor from its release era is intriguing, it differs from the fruity image, possibly representing a more traditional Laphroaig than expected.
