Glenury Royal GLENURY ROYAL 1971 23yo OB RARE MALTS SELECTION 61.3%
The aroma features plum jam, persimmon, caramel, cinnamon, a strong barley note, caramelized nuts, richness, a strong initial attack when drinking, slight viscosity, pronounced sweetness from plum jam and caramel, umami from barley, and a long oily finish with resinous pine-like characteristics. [Good/Very Good]
The Glenury Royal 1971 from UD Rare Malts is a 23-year-old matured whisky. As usual, it was bottled at a very high proof, giving a strong initial attack. However, while many bottles in this category have a relatively plain cask influence and preserve the original spirit's character, this one has noticeable caramel-like sweetness and concentrated fruity notes, with a sense of cask influence such as resinous pine. I wondered if they had vatting a reasonable amount of non-plain casks like sherry casks. As I imagined the usual clean type, it felt a bit unexpected, but this was quite a nice malt in its own right.
