A Speyside malt with a base of barley's umami, delicious. Cragganmore 1985 29yo THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY "37.63" 54.0% One of 169 bottles, Refill Bourbon Hogshead The aroma has a matured strong barley note, cookies, ginger tea, citrus and yuzu, with pear and peach faintly emerging over time. When drinking, it has a spicy sensation, strong barley notes with rich umami, good acidity, honey sweetness, solid oak, a touch of oil, and a long finish. 【Good/Very Good】 The SMWS number 37 corresponds to Cragganmore's 1985, 29-year-old new release. (※SMWS distillery code list here) When thinking of a 29-year-old Speyside, one might imagine a fruity maturity, but this is a type centered around barley's umami in both aroma and flavor. The fruity maturity, especially the pear and peach notes, are located deeper in the aroma, giving an impression that they might come forward more with additional aging time. While it's full of barley notes, these are not immature but rather matured and strong with rich umami. Those who enjoy this style will find it very enjoyable. The barley umami is complemented by sweetness and acidity, along with a well-balanced oak nuance that tightens the flavor slightly, resulting in a pleasant drinking experience without any rawness.
