SMWS reference 29.145 = Laphroaig 1990, 22-year-old.
The aroma initially presents the strong fruity character of grapefruit often found in 90s refill casks, but also reveals rich fruits like apricot jam and banana. The characteristic strong peat with seaweed notes, typical of Laphroaig, and the briny, seafood nuances reminiscent of Islay are evident. Overall, it's a complex, richly layered aroma.
The palate is gentle due to its lower ABV but expands with a broad range of flavors. Similar to the aroma, it offers not only citrus notes but also jam-like fruitiness and a rich, sweet depth. The strong iodine character is present alongside sufficient umami from barley and seafood dashi.
The flavor exhibits the bold, full-bodied intensity typical of Islay cask strength, despite its lower ABV.
Laphroaig 1990 is a vintage with many releases from various bottlers, but this SMWS bottle retains elements closer to an official release, offering a deeply satisfying experience with its richness and depth.
