Bennevis BENNEVIS 1996-2015 18yo WHISKYBASE #2121 50.6%
one of 606 bottles, SHERRY BUTT
The aroma features good sherry notes with ripe plums and orange, chocolate, caramelized nuts, butterscotch, rich, sweet, with a touch of acidity, oily, and rich. [Good/Very Good]
This is a new release of Bennevis 1996, bottled by WHISKYBASE after an 18-year maturation. The aroma starts with a decent sherry character, followed by notes of ripe fruits and chocolate, with some oily undertones reminiscent of caramelized nuts and butterscotch. It is rich and quite complex. The taste was similarly dense, oily, and rich as the aroma. Importantly, there were no paper-like or grainy characteristics that I usually dislike. The flavor was sweet and pleasant, with a satisfying mouthfeel.
Lately, I've had more opportunities to try Bennevis, and frequently encountered releases that lacked the usual off-putting elements I previously associated with it. Although I had never bought any Bennevis before and didn't plan to, a recent opportunity to purchase one at a relatively low price for an Allanshaw bottling led me to buy this. In my opinion, I've suddenly revised my view of this distillery.
