A Laphroaig that defies convention and is delicious. Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1998-2015 16yo CADENHEAD Authentic Collection 57.5% One of 198 bottles, Bourbon Hogshead The aroma has citrus and heavy apricot jam, oil, nuts, tar, a strong, moist peat, matured barley notes from the depths, seaweed, iodine and strong smoke, good oak character. Upon drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel and expands powerfully with the fragrance of ripe oranges, pineapples, faint passion fruit, vanilla, strong sweetness and rich, concentrated barley umami, nuts, strong peat, a rich oak and oily, fruity finish that is long. [Good/Very Good] New release from Cadenhead's Authentic Collection, Laphroaig 1998, 16 year old maturation. The fruitiness has a citrusy note reminiscent of bottlers, with a faint tropical sensation, while also feeling the nuances of matured fruits and jam-like characteristics. The peat was powerful but I didn't sense the charcoal or ash notes typical of recent official releases, nor a strong iodine flavor. It was an extremely rich and sweet type, with the fruitiness of fruits and barley umami, as well as strong peat, each clearly asserting their presence.
