The barrel character and honey lemon aroma were impressive. Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1998-2016 18yo SPECIALITY DRINKS #122010 52.6% one of 287 bottles, Bourbon Barrel The aroma features a strong honey lemon, green apple, vanilla, faint cream, barley and oak, with a robust smoky peat that also has some iodine. When drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel and gradually expands into the rich sweetness of honey lemon, balanced by pleasant oak notes. There is a slight woody sensation and some bitterness, along with a strong peat that has a seafood stock-like quality and iodine. The finish is long. [Good/Very Good] This is a new release of Laphroaig 1998, aged for 18 years, from the Speciality Drinks (Whisky Exchange). The bourbon barrel characteristics such as honey, lemon, vanilla, and cream are clearly present. The peat has a strong seafood stock-like quality with iodine, typical of Laphroaig. In particular, the strong honey lemon character and the slight woody sensation and bitterness often found in barrel-aged whiskies were impressive. This is the kind of aroma that would immediately make one think of a barrel-aged Laphroaig 1998.
