Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1999-2008 8yo TWE The Single Malts of Scotland #60103 57.6% One of 300 bottles, Hogshead
The aroma featured grapefruit, dry barley, and a strong fresh peat with a touch of charcoal. Upon tasting, it presented a concentrated, powdery texture with citrus fruits, powdered cheese, and a slightly charcoal-like peatiness, along with intense sweetness and a pleasant citrus acidity that lingers on the palate. [Good/Very Good]
From Specialty Drinks (Whisky Exchange)'s The Single Malts of Scotland collection, this Laphroaig 1999 is short-aged at 8 years. The aroma strongly conveyed the fresh citrus fruitiness often found in refill cask Laphroaig, and as expected for a young Islay whisky, it also showed strong barley and peat notes. Upon tasting, the concentrated texture with a powdery sensation, along with rich citrus and powdered cheese nuances, clearly reflected the appealing characteristics of my favorite refill cask Laphroaig. While the body wasn't overwhelming, the strong Islay peatiness typical of cask strength expressions asserted itself without being overshadowed by the fruity notes. Though lacking complexity due to its short aging, it still carried a youthful charm and delivered a satisfyingly fruity Laphroaig experience that left a positive impression.
