It's quite distinctive and another enjoyable aspect of single malt.

one of 308 bottles, REFILL HOGSHEAD
The aroma features vanilla and white flowers, a plant-like quality reminiscent of wild mustard, syrup, smoky strong peat, and slightly machine oil.
When tasted, it has floral notes and a unique plant-like quality similar to the aroma, vanilla, sweetness without any off-flavors like syrup, some saltiness, and later oil and peat.
[Okay/Good, Interesting]
This is a Hunter Laing Old Malt Cask Loch Lomond 2006, aged for 10 years, bottled recently for the Japanese JIS.
As it's a peated type, this would be considered the so-called 'Croftengea' style.
Although it's an OMC, it was bottled in a special cask strength format.
What stood out was the unique, wild mustard-like nuance often found in other distilleries like Inchmarnock, both in aroma and flavor.
There's also a floral quality and vanilla-like notes from the cask, with peat and oil nuances following through.
It's quite distinctive, and although it's not my favorite type of malt, as a Lowland malt or single malt, such individuality is enjoyable.
Additionally, while this particular sample isn't like that, in recent years I've noticed some samples of this Croftengea style that have a tropical fruit-like quality often referred to as 'tropical,' suggesting that if releases continue, it might become popular.
