Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 16yo THE WHISKY EXCHANGE 50.9%
The aroma presents a strong fruity profile evoking plum wine, with pronounced barley notes, seaweed-like minerals, and intense peatiness with a hint of iodine. On the palate, it begins with a smooth mouthfeel, expanding into a sweet and tangy depth reminiscent of plum wine, accompanied by well-balanced tannins from oak, robust peatiness with iodine undertones, and a long, oily, sweet finish.
[Good/Very Good, Interesting]
This is a new release from The Whisky Exchange. Calculating backwards, it likely dates to around 1999. It delivers the characteristic strong peatiness of Laphroaig, accompanied by a seaweed-like mineral quality, while the initial impression strongly evokes the fruity notes of plum wine. This continues on the palate, with its sweet and tangy profile closely mirroring plum wine, leaving a lasting impression. Other elements are also well-developed, with a sense of completeness that earns it the title of an impressive Laphroaig worthy of The Exchange's reputation.
Interestingly, I'm currently making plum wine at home using Islay malts and occasionally tasting the aging product. This may explain why I was particularly sensitive to the similar nuances in this whisky. However, these characteristics are unique compared to other Laphroaigs I've tasted. So distinctive was the profile that after tasting it once, I completely forgot about it and ordered a second tasting on another day—only to immediately recall having tasted it before upon drinking it.
