Strathmill STRATHMILL 1963-2003 40yo DOUGLAS LAING Old Malt Cask #617 50% one of 444 bottles
The aroma is strong, seductive, and complex, with richness, apricot jam, orange marmalade, oversteeped black tea, a solid rustic barley note, accompanied by a faint hinoki-like woody character. There's also a subtle leather and leaf mold, clove, herbs, nuts, old peat, and a rich complexity.
On the palate, it has thickness and a fragrant expansion with a silky, viscous texture. The apricot jam provides a rich sweetness, with solid woody notes and pleasant tannins. The barley's umami permeates, revealing old peat from the depths. It is slightly oily with a long, pleasant finish.
[Very Good]
This Strathmill 1963, 40-year-old whisky comes from Douglas Laing's OMC. While OMC Strathmills are often associated with the highly popular 1962 in a douglas cask, this one isn't as intensely colored.
As described above, it starts with a strong aroma of seduction and complexity, as well as richness. There's a clear sense of concentrated fruitiness akin to heat-concentrated flavors, and despite its super long aging, the barley character remains intact. The woody notes are strong but not overly harsh, with earthiness, leather, spices, herbs, and old peat creating a diverse and appealing array of components.
The flavor combines complexity and richness without betraying the aroma, with a silky viscosity and strong sweetness. The woody notes are robust but not overly tannic, deepening the flavor further, while old peat emerges like a hidden seasoning.
Additionally, both aroma and flavor reveal successive appealing elements, making it an enjoyable malt to taste.
With a 50% ABV and this thickness and concentrated flavor, it's likely that minimal dilution was used.
