GlenDullan GLENDULLAN 1965-1988 23yo CADENHEAD for MIZUHASHI 52.5% Very Good/Excellent
Bottle #グレンダラン(GLENDULLAN)
A wonderful Dullan that exudes the charm of its peak. GlenDullan GLENDULLAN 1965-1988 23yo CADENHEAD for MIZUHASHI 52.5% The aroma features a pleasant old peat character with refined rustic barley notes, evoking plum jam, light apricot tea, earthiness, and a subtle sensual quality. On the palate, it begins with a gentle mouthfeel that gradually coats the tongue with textured layers. The barley's umami is chewy and rich, accompanied by a moist sweetness and lingering old peat notes. The finish is long and sensual, without overwhelming oak influence. This Cadenhead bottling for Mizuhashi Co., Ltd. was released around 1988, aging GlenDullan from 1965 for approximately 23 years. Though I often write about Mizuhashi bottles, the dedication to Japanese market cask strength bottlings during this era is remarkable. Despite being over 30 years old, it retains its pleasant aged character without signs of deterioration. The aroma first presents deep, savory barley notes before revealing concentrated fruity elements. Unlike typical island peat expressions with earthy sensuality, this old peat character feels like a 1960s-era spirit that has undergone moderate aging. The texture delivers umami that lingers on the tongue, with a satisfying chewiness. The moist, rich sweetness and sensual old peat character are captivating. The lack of overpowering oak influence allows for a satisfying, multi-layered experience where one can savor the depth of flavor. I could easily drink bottle after bottle at home. This is a typical Cadenhead release from this period, showcasing the rustic original spirit character without excessive cask influence. However, due to its relatively lower ABV and aging effects, it feels more refined than expected. Unlike the often inaccessible Green Cadenhead style, this bottling is approachable and welcoming. Though currently at its peak in aroma and flavor, I felt a touch of melancholy as I had expected it to last longer. However, according to the master, this was a slightly shorter-necked bottle, so if in good condition, it might have had longer aging potential.
