Finally got to drink it. Very moved. Laphroaig 1966-1997 31yo Signatory Vintage #1094 49.3% one of 210 bottles The aroma is mellow and gentle, with notes of apricot jam, grapefruit jam, cream, tree sap, faint leaf mold, iodine, strong peat, musk, and a rich, sensual quality. Upon drinking, it starts with a soft, viscous texture that expands powerfully. Concentrated grapefruit, chewy texture, wax, sweet richness with a gentle acidity, salty salted peanuts, chlorine and cresol, a mature yet strong peat, oily and long finish. [Very Good/Excellent] This was bottled by Signatory in 1997. I love Laphroaig, but 60s distillates at cask strength are rarely encountered. I've had near-misses with this Signatory 1966 in the past, but finally got to experience it. The first impression of the aroma is a mellow cask strength, with concentrated fruitiness, creaminess, and earthy peat accompanied by iodine. Due to aging, it has complexity and depth with a sensual quality. Though mature, the taste expands powerfully with concentrated grapefruit, rich texture, and a saltiness reminiscent of Ardbeg or early 70s Bruichladdich. While the aroma and taste differ slightly, the sensuality remains, with a lingering aftertaste. Thank you for this wonderful experience.
