The aroma is gentle with a rustic maturity and an elegant intoxicating sensation, featuring softly ripened figs, faint peaches, a slightly damp grainy note with refined peat, nuts, and extremely rich characteristics.
When drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel that gradually expands into a rich, aromatic complexity. The texture lingers on the tongue, with refined fruits, a solid grainy umami, nuts, tar, and old peat. The finish is rich and long-lasting with an intoxicating aftertaste.
[Very Good/Excellent]
This GlenDullan 1966, aged for 36 years, was bottled by Douglas Laing's Old & Rare in 2002. Despite its 36-year aging, it lacks artificial maturity notes and instead offers an elegant intoxicating depth. The concentrated fruits and nuts, combined with a surprisingly damp grainy character for its age, create a unified expression. The smooth mouthfeel, devoid of alcohol sensation, expands into an aromatic complexity, with a rich umami that lingers on the tongue. The flavor includes fruits and grains alongside tar and old peat, offering a rich taste with a long, intoxicating finish. Adding nuttiness suggests it might be from a refill Fino cask. Personally, I strongly believe that such barrels and aging environments are truly suited for long-term maturation. Green-bottled Old & Rare series often feature this type, and they are consistently exceptional. Although hesitant, I greatly prefer this style of malt, with an impeccable drinking window, hence my evaluation of VG/E.
