Balblair BALBLAIR 1966-2004 38yo Official Bottling Limited Edition 44% ABV
The aroma is very floral and strong, with estery notes of ripe melon, pear, refined black tea, pleasant old sherry, creamy fruity cake-like qualities, herbs, and a sense of intoxication. On the palate, it is equally elegant with a smooth mouthfeel, estery and very fruity characteristics, prominent ripe melon upfront, followed by old sherry and peat in the background. It offers a refined yet strong sweetness with a pleasant acidity, minimal barley notes but a well-maintained body, and an unusually long finish. [Very Good]
This official limited edition Balblair was bottled in 2004, aged for 38 years from 1966. It exhibits a burst of estery aging aromas right from the start, reminiscent of cask strength after long maturation. As described above, it has a remarkably diverse array of fruity notes, with the nuance of ripe melon strongly asserting itself in both aroma and flavor, making it very impressive. The creaminess adds a sensation of a fruit-filled cake. In the background, there are noble nuances from 1960s sherry casks, creating a wonderful intoxicating experience. While barley notes are almost absent (replaced by fruits), the thickness that provides drinking satisfaction remains, differing from similar fruity long-aged expressions like Duncan Taylor's. That is the mark of an official bottling, no doubt. With its outstanding fruitiness and a sense of special occasion, this long-aged official Balblair is truly remarkable.
