The aroma is intense with tropical fruits: mango, passion fruit, pineapple, grapefruit zest, white grapes, a sexy underarm-like nuance, yellow flowers, light mint, and good woodiness. There's no harshness but strong peat. Upon drinking, it starts with a soft mouthfeel and expands again with tropical fruits bursting forth, underarm-like nuance, mint. The peat-smoke is more forward and stronger than the aroma impression. It has some viscosity but not much sweetness, with a slight spicy pepperiness. The good oak deepens the flavor. The body thickness isn't too much, and the finish is not very long but pleasant.
【Very Good/Excellent】
This is a Bowmore 1966, 36-year-old cask from Douglas Laing's OMC. The aroma is immediately very fruity, with the expected tropical fruits like mango and passion fruit exploding. You can also sense grapefruit zest and white grapes, making the fruits diverse. Additionally, I felt a unique sexy nuance reminiscent of underarm-like notes often found in this era's Bowmore. The woodiness isn't harsh, and the peat is prominent.
When drinking, the tropical fruits remain diverse and give a sense of intoxication. However, compared to the aroma impression, the peat feels stronger. The alcohol strength is nearly at its lowest, so the body isn't too thick, but there was an intoxicating feeling until the finish.
Indeed, a 60s Bowmore, especially from 1966, is incredibly fruity. Like Heart Brothers, the releases from Douglas Laing I know of have nearly dropped to 40% alcohol strength. Perhaps they bought casks from around Duncan Taylor.
The aroma is similar, but personally, I often feel the sexy underarm-like nuance more in Douglas Laing's releases than Duncan Taylor's. Comparing this to the Celtic 1966 Bowmore I drank recently at Yurakucho, it seems this bottle has a stronger peat character as well as the underarm-like nuance.
Being able to make such comparisons really makes me feel I'm in a luxurious environment.
