【Very Good】
The official 1966 Benriach, aged for 38 years.
It was a bottle opened for the 15th anniversary of Campbelltown Loch in Ginza.
Although marked as hogshead, it is likely a sherry hogshead. Immediately after uncorking, it was hard and closed, but gradually opened up and changed into an attractive flavor over time.
The aroma increasingly strengthens the strawberry jam sensation, with rich fruitiness of ripe plums and oranges. The tropical feel is naturally present, but as a long-matured sherry type, the woodiness is slightly stronger. It was also impressive that the barley character remained despite the aging.
When drinking, it has a fragrant spread with a clear sense of tropical fruits like pineapple. Although there is sometimes a chemical nuance reminiscent of children's syrup medicine often found in Benriach, it was unexpectedly mild. Instead, the rich jam-like fruity sweetness and good woodiness with accompanying astringency deepened the flavor, making it a very rich and delicious Benriach.
It took some time to fully express its potential, but after opening, I think it fully demonstrated its potential.
I tried drinking it again just before it ran out, but the time needed for its charm to blossom was indeed rushed.
I was able to savor this rare vintage Benriach.
