BOWMORE 1969 25yo OB 43%
The aroma is an intoxicatingly strong fruity scent, with fresh grape juice, passion fruit, lychee, and tropical fruits clearly present. There's a good malty character and a powerful peatiness, with hints of seawater or seafood stock. The mouthfeel is smooth, with the same strong and diverse fruits and their sweetness, a droplet-like juiciness, a slightly viscous texture, a powerful peatiness, and a long, intoxicating finish that maintains its body.
【Very Good/Excellent】
This is an official 25-year-old bottling of Bowmore 1969, released in the 1990s. From the first whiff, there's an intense aroma that immediately gives a 'this is it' feeling. The strong tropical fruits like passion fruit and lychee, characteristic of 1960s Bowmore, are simultaneously present with a grape-like juiciness that seems to originate from high-quality sherry cask maturation. Moreover, it's not one-sidedly fruity; a good malty character from the back, along with seafood stock or seawater-like notes and a powerful peatiness, are clearly expressed. Upon drinking, the tropical sensation and droplet-like grape juiciness typical of 1960s Bowmore, along with a stronger peatiness than expected, create an exceptionally long and intoxicating aftertaste. As it's an official bottling, the quality of the vatting, which includes sherry, is clearly expressed. Although this is a watered-down bottling, it's evidently more robust in terms of peatiness and body compared to contemporaneous vintage cask strength bottles like the peerless from the same era. Furthermore, it seems that this peatiness and body enhance the fruity characteristics even more, resulting in a Bowmore with an intoxicatingly long-lasting sensation.
Excellent.
※There seems to be considerable variation depending on the cask, as I've had bottles with the same label from different sources. While one had an extremely intoxicating aroma, another was quite perfumy. In the 1960s and 1970s, there are occasionally unexpectedly perfumy bottles, which feel more like added flavors during bottling rather than the original characteristics of the 1980s bottles.
