The aroma is elegant and full of maturity, with notes of apricot tea, orange marmalade, lightly ripe melon, and a pleasant vanilla cream with woodiness. On the palate, it has a smooth mouthfeel with orange cream, ripe melon, and a sweet honey-like flavor. The woody depth is refined and long-lasting, with a pleasant lingering finish. [Good/Very Good]
Bottled in 1994, this official Knockando 1970 is approximately 24 years old. Interestingly, the official bottles of Knockando come in two forms: a tall bottle and this square bottle. While the boundary between them is unclear, it seems that shorter maturation is in the former and longer maturation in the latter. Regarding the essential content, it starts with an elegant aroma that immediately conveys long-term maturation. The diverse fruity notes include a pleasant old-world character and a melon-like sweetness that left an impression. The taste is gentle, as expected from a super-aged old whisky, with a well-balanced fruity sweetness and woody depth that provides moderate complexity. It was an extremely enjoyable malt with a certain intoxicating quality.
Official bottlings of Knockando often include vintage dates, especially those from the 1960s to mid-1970s, which are predominantly fruity. There are few instances of the robust grainy character commonly found in limited editions from major brands, instead showcasing a more refined fruity elegance reminiscent of bottlers' specialties. One of the moments that left me in awe was realizing that such a flavor could exist even in official bottlings. In fact, I sometimes wonder if a thick, high-quality spirit aged in good casks wouldn't result in such a flavor profile. It makes me want to try the same bottle from the time of its release.
