Ben Nevis BEN NEVIS 1970-2014 43yo ACLA SELECTION 44.7%
one of 297 bottles, BOURBON HOGSHEAD
The aroma is oily and heavy yet with a sense of maturity, reminiscent of overcooked apricot tea, strong vanilla and caramel, milk chocolate, and a rich woody character. Upon drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel that expands into a fragrant complexity of strong vanilla and woody notes, apricot jam, nuances similar to aged grain or bourbon, malty elements with a grainy or paper-like quality, and a concentrated sweetness balanced by a surprisingly light tannin. Though heavy, the finish is clean and lingering.
This is an aged bottling of Ben Nevis 1970, matured for 43 years, bottled by Acla da Fans. It seems to be a Swiss bottler.
There was a period when aged Ben Nevis bottles were widely released, and at that time I drank many despite not being particularly fond of its aroma. However, it's been a while since I encountered one like this.
As expected, the aroma is rich and heavy with a mature character, featuring concentrated fruits, vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, and elements reminiscent of sherry cask-aged whiskies. To summarize, it has the aroma profile of an aged grain or bourbon whisky.
Additionally, the distinctive paper-like or oily character typical of Ben Nevis is well expressed. Although I haven't done blind tastings recently, my skills have likely declined, but even so, Ben Nevis is undeniably unique. Despite its strong woody character, it lacks astringency, and while the aroma is heavy, the finish feels light. This suggests that if the unique aroma doesn't bother you, it's a whisky that won't leave you feeling fatigued after drinking.
