Bowmore BOWMORE 1971 18yo SESTANTE 57.1%
The aroma features a strong, old-fashioned sherried character with concentrated grape juice (with skin), caramel sauce, American coffee, balsamic vinegar, herbs, leather, and earthiness, with complexity and depth from peat coming through from the back.
On the palate, it delivers an intense, rich sherried flavor, mirroring the aroma with concentrated grape juice (with skin), a dense sweetness, and a robust tannic depth that enhances the flavor profile. Notes of herbal liqueur, leather, sesame, and a subtle wild grassy bitterness add complexity, finishing with peat and a rich, long-lasting finish.
【Very Good】
This Bowmore 1971, aged for 18 years, was bottled by Sestante. The color is deep and the sherried character dominates with a strong presence. The aroma offers a diverse range of elements, including the fruitiness of grape juice with skin, caramel, coffee, balsamic vinegar, and herbs or leather. The smoky peat character is assertive and does not back down.
On the palate, it delivers a strong and diverse sherried character similar to the aroma, with rich sweetness and deep tannins that enhance the flavor, alongside a subtle bitterness. The peat character is clearly felt, and the cask strength Islay malt, with its high alcohol content, left a powerful impression. While I did not detect the intense tropical fruit notes often found in some 1960s or early 1970s Bowmores, this was a standout sherried cask Bowmore.
