Glen Garioch 1972 15 Year Old Slim Cowell's Personal Selection II 60%
Bottle #グレンギリー(GLENGARIOCH)
As soon as I took a sip, my skin prickled with goosebumps. And I'm certain it's definitely Glen Garioch.
Glen Garioch GLENGARIOCH 1972 15yo Slim Cowell's Personal Selection II 60%
The aroma is a sensuous old sherry with noble nuances, berry jam, fresh grape skins, strong malty notes that are not masked by sherry, an earthy quality reminiscent of decaying leaves, a smoky and strong peat with a hint of cigar leaf, leather, herbal notes like bouquet garni, and spicy clove-like sensations. It's rich and complex.
The palate starts with a non-stimulating mouthfeel that expands into an extremely aromatic and refined texture, with flavors emerging with each bite. It's extremely complex, featuring a dominant yet not overpowering sensuous old sherry, berry jam and grape skins, bitter chocolate, concentrated fruity sweetness, a pleasant tannic grip from grape skins, old herbal liqueur, toasty barley, earthy qualities of decaying leaves, woody characteristics like antique furniture, a slightly tar-like damp peat, tanned leather, and an elegant, intoxicatingly long finish.
[Excellent]
A Highland malt without distillery information, distilled in 1972 and aged for 15 years, so it was bottled around 1987. It seems to be a bottle intended for the Caledonian House shop in Hamburg.
As you can tell from my excitement in the tasting notes, it's an exceptionally delicious whisky. The overall aroma is covered by a rich old sherry nuance, with fruity notes of berries and grape skins, high-end bitter chocolate, a subtle spice reminiscent of Indian curry in herbs, earthy elements like leather and decaying leaves, deep woody character, and a lingering malty note. These elements emerge and blend seamlessly in both aroma and flavor, creating an intoxicatingly long finish.
There's so much to write about its charm, but the standout features are undoubtedly the exceptional old sherry character and the Highland-like peatiness reminiscent of cigars, combined with earthy qualities. Alongside these, there are numerous diverse and charming elements that add color and depth to the flavor profile.
It's remarkably diverse yet cohesive, and surprisingly feminine and elegant in its overall impression. I haven't had a malt that gave me goosebumps in a long time.
This bottle is scheduled to be served at next year's Nagoya event 'Whisky Lovers Nagoya 2017' by IAN from Mitsuwa, and it's said to be non-saleable in bars. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to taste it, and it was a blissful time where I wanted to keep tasting forever.
Although there's no distillery information, this bottler has only released Glen Garioch for their past Highland malts. Moreover, the flavor is undeniably Glen Garioch.
When it comes to exceptional Glen Garioch, the legendary sherry cask bottling of Samaroli 1971 Full Proof comes to mind, but both are equally outstanding. If I had to choose, Samaroli has more power while this one feels more elegant.
This Glen Garioch is so exceptional that I would gladly travel to Nagoya just to taste it.
