LONGMORN LONGMORN 1972-2006 GM for La Maison du Whisky #1088 45%
The aroma presents noble sherry, berry jam, grape juice, Armagnac, dried fruits, bouquet garni herbs, richness. Upon drinking, it spreads smoothly with grape juice, pineapple, tropical fruits, oriental resin notes, leather, juicy intense sweetness, astringency without harshness, and a long finish. [Very Good]
This Longmorn 1972 was bottled by GM for La Maison du Whisky in France in 2006. From the first impression of the aroma, it clearly conveys a remarkable sherry character and diverse, rich elements like fruits and herbs that are no longer found in current bottlings. When drinking, the nuances of tropical fruits and resinous notes reminiscent of the mid-1970s are clearly present. Most importantly, the sensation of grape juice akin to crushed Concord grapes is abundantly felt in both aroma and flavor, which was exactly as expected and left a strong impression.
While recent bottlings often accompany excessive woodiness and astringency, this bottle, filled in 2006 and bottled with water addition, lacks harsh woodiness or astringency, allowing for a pleasant, smooth enjoyment from start to finish. The balance of maturation and water addition feels perfectly measured, as expected from La Maison du Whisky.
The exceptional sherry cask style of Longmorn, which was previously best experienced in the now-discontinued GM 30-year-old (40%), felt here as if it had been further deepened and enriched in aroma and flavor.
