The aroma is heavy and strong, with baked apples, bitter chocolate-covered oranges, cinnamon, caramelized nuts, American coffee, buttery oils, boiled-down black tea, strong woodiness, expands into a rich fragrance when drunk, the warmth of a fireplace, slightly viscous texture, intense sweetness of cinnamon and baked apples, strong woodiness, faint katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes), slightly grassy bitterness but not harsh, long finish.
[Good/Very Good]
SMWS number 21.27 = Glenglassaugh 1972, 39-year-old long-matured whisky.
For a Glenglassaugh matured in the early 1970s, one might expect a more estery, floral, and tropical style typical of recent official releases. However, this bottle is entirely different.
From the outset, the aroma has a heavy feel with elements reminiscent of baked fruits like apples, chocolate, caramel, and coffee—characteristics more commonly associated with sherry casks than bourbon casks. The impression of tannic astringency is strong, with boiled-down tea and coffee, and pronounced woodiness.
Upon tasting, the concentrated, warm impression with viscosity is evident, mirroring the aroma's heated fruits and sweetness. While it's somewhat debatable whether this is distinctly Glenglassaugh, a grassy bitterness was also detected.
The woodiness is strong but the bitterness and astringency are not overly prominent, leading to a long finish.
Although the cask influence is somewhat strong and the impression of over-oxidation is undeniable, it's not a complete cask loss. The whisky maintains its own character with rich and complex flavors, making it a long-matured, concentrated malt.
