Glenlivet GLENLIVET 1972 42yo BBR EXCEPTIONAL CASKS #1072 53%
one of 170 bottles
The aroma is lavish and complex, with notes of ripe orange, pineapple, cinnamon and ginger, good barley character, clove, herbs, a touch of leather and mint that fades smoothly. The palate is rich and smooth, with some viscosity, plum jam, pineapple, juicy fruitiness, a hint of perilla oil and mirin. The body has thickness and a slightly chewy umami, with pleasant woodiness without over-ripeness, and a seductive long finish. [Very Good]
This seems to be BBR's new series, the 'EXCEPTIONAL CASKS' Glenlivet 1972, a single cask aged for 42 years. Although it's a high-priced bottle costing around ¥100,000, its unique form and the dedication of BBR are evident.
The 1972 vintage is a popular release from many bottlers including BBR, with various types all being delicious. However, this bottle stood out as an exceptional malt unlike any other.
As described above, the aroma is a lavish and diverse array of ripe fruits, barley character, spices, herbs, leather nuances that intertwine yet remain distinct. Upon drinking, it has the smoothness of a long-aged whisky while being rich and powerful, with diverse ripe fruitiness and juicy notes. The woodiness is not overpowering, with some unusual nuances like perilla oil and mirin adding depth to the flavor, creating a thick, concentrated taste with a touch of seduction.
Despite its 42-year aging, there's no over-ripeness or dryness, and no off-flavors were detected. It truly feels like BBR has unveiled a special cask they had been keeping.
Though extremely expensive and out of reach for most, it's a new release that makes one hesitate between Very Good/Excellent. A high-proof long-aged whisky with stable quality, showing no signs of decline. I believe that if left unopened for 20 years, it would become even more exceptional.
