Tomatin TOMATIN 1974-2005 OB #26828 44.2%
The aroma has a matured feel, with luscious fruits like pears and peaches, gentle grains, vanilla, and a refined elegance. When tasted, it has a smooth and slightly rich mouthfeel, with the gentle sweetness of peach juice, balanced acidity, vanilla, subtle chemical nuances, and a lingering rich aftertaste with gentle grain notes. [Good/Very Good]
This is an official single cask bottling released by Tomatin in 2005. After approximately 31 years of aging, the ABV has dropped to the mid-44% range. From the first aroma, the luscious fruits like peaches characteristic of long-aged Tomatin were strongly present. Despite the aging period and reduced ABV, surprisingly, the grain notes remained, giving it an overall refined aroma typical of official bottlings. Upon tasting, while the texture felt slightly richer compared to the aroma, the fruity characteristics typical of long-aged whiskies dominated. The subtle chemical nuances I usually find less appealing were not strongly present, and the balance of fruity sweetness and acidity created a pleasant flavor profile. Although there was a slightly slick sensation, compared to the Sherry-influenced bottlings (around 76) common among other bottlers, this one felt more refined with fewer rough elements. Perhaps due to its lower viscosity, it emphasized the peach-like qualities over tropical notes, which was intriguing.
