one of 229 bottles
The aroma was strong, waxy, oily, with a refreshing lemon and faint plant-like notes, a robust yet youthful barley character, some coconut, oak, a touch of dashi and peat. Upon drinking, it starts with an exciting mouthfeel that expands into a richly aromatic profile, with some viscosity, fresh yet concentrated citrus notes, a faint honey sweetness, a strong barley character with umami, and a slight peatiness. The oily finish lingers in the mouth.
【Good/Very Good】
This is a cask strength Clynelish 1974, aged for 27 years, from Signatory's Dumpy Bottle range.
The waxy and oily aroma typical of Clynelish was present, with a slightly refreshing citrus and plant-like character, as well as a strong youthful barley note. Upon tasting, there was an unexpected level of stimulation, and for a Clynelish, the viscosity was moderate. The fresh nuance was similar to the aroma, and the umami-rich barley character was strongly felt. The peatiness was faint, but the oily finish definitely felt like Clynelish.
While the typical Clynelish character was present, compared to a classic example, the viscosity wasn't particularly strong, and the sweetness wasn't overly sticky, giving an overall fresh impression. This may be due to aging in plain casks, which might have hindered the development of maturity. However, the barley character was strong and the umami was rich, making it enjoyable in its own way.
This bottle was obtained from IAN at Mitsukoshi.
