Bottle #ベンリアック(BENRIACH)
I approached it with caution due to the unusual cask usage, but it turned out to be somewhat of a standard 1976 flavor. (Laugh) BenRiach BENRIACH 1976-2014 37yo OB #5463 51.9% One of 170 bottles, Peated/Sherry Cask Matured/Bourbon Barrel Finish The aroma features ripe oranges, peaches, pineapples, bananas, blackberries, bitter chocolate, clove, cream, richness. Upon drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel and expands into a rich, tropical flavor reminiscent of pineapple, peaches, clove, a subtle smoky note, jam-like sweetness, balanced woodiness and tannins, with a long, rich finish. [Good/Very Good] This is one of the latest releases from BenRiach's official line, a 37-year-old vintage from 1976. The specifications are intriguing: originally peated malt matured in sherry casks, then finished in bourbon barrels—a rare process that I approached with some caution during tasting. The aroma offers a diverse range of tropical fruits like peaches and pineapple, characteristic of BenRiach 1976, alongside berry notes and chocolate/spice nuances from the sherry cask maturation. This complexity was a highlight. Upon tasting, the mouthfeel is smooth, but the alcohol content adds some body. The tropical flavors, including a chemical-like nuance reminiscent of pineapple, were sufficiently fruity. The balance between the rich sweetness and tannins was well done, resulting in a deliciously rich experience. While it retains the 1976 character, the diverse elements from sherry casks take center stage. The body and woodiness are noticeable, though it lacks the intense fruitiness of lower-proof BenRiach 1976 releases. However, the variety of flavors and depth provided a satisfying drinking experience. The influence of the main sherry cask is clear, but I couldn't pinpoint exactly where the additional bourbon barrel finish came through. Nonetheless, it contributes to the complexity and depth of flavor. Overall, this BenRiach 1976 was reassuringly enjoyable without any need for caution.
