The aroma is estery and elegant with peaches, pears, orange peel, oak, and a faint trace of tar. On the palate it is strongly estery with fruity notes of peaches, pears, pineapple, orange, a rich sweetness, citrus peel bitterness, and tar. Despite its alcohol content, it has a solid body with a fruity finish.
[Good/Very Good]
This Glenugie 1977, aged for 27 years, was selected and bottled by Celtic Heartlands Jim McEwan. The aroma revealed a highly estery, diverse range of fruits often found in Duncan Taylor's long-aged whiskies, with almost no malt character remaining. Impressively, a tar-like note often found in distilleries from the East Highlands was present in the background. On the palate, similarly to the aroma, there were diverse fruits with a touch of tropical elements. However, it was difficult to determine whether this was characteristic of old-style Glenugie or long-aged malts in general. The fruity sweetness had a pleasant bitterness reminiscent of citrus peel, and with its tar-like qualities, it felt thicker than expected for its alcohol content. Considering the diversity of strong fruity notes and the lack of malty characteristics, the aging depth was clearly over 30 years.
