Highland Park HIGHLAND PARK 1978-1993 THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY 'L4.16' 58%
Bottle #ハイランドパーク(HIGHLANDPARK)
While the meaning of the 'L' is intriguing, this was a delicious Highland Park in the style of an old Society bottling. Highland Park HIGHLAND PARK 1978-1993 THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY 'L4.16' 58% The aroma features plain cask notes, a robust barley character, honey, citrus from the depths, good oak, mild ginger, and peat with a smoky emphasis. On the palate, it gradually becomes spicy, still showing some roughness but with a penetrating barley sweetness, good sweetness, cinnamon, and a refined peat character without extraneous flavors, leaving a pleasant aftertaste. [Very Good] This Highland Park 1978 was released by the Society in 1993, aged approximately 15 years. Around this era, many Society bottlings of 70s distillates often had plain oak characteristics and were non-chill filtered, resulting in nuances similar to the Caol Ila Green Bottle. This bottle was no exception. It exhibits a plain, understated character with minimal cask influence. The initial sharpness from bottling has softened slightly, and the overly robust barley notes have mellowed, giving way to fruitiness emerging from deeper layers. It also showcases a Highland Park-like peat character with smoky dominance, free from iodine or extraneous flavors—very appealing. This bottle now seems to have reached its drinking prime, and opening it at this moment makes the passage of time particularly enjoyable. Notably, as this is a Society bottling, there's no distillery name listed—only the distillery code. As seen in the photo, for some reason, an 'L' is prefixed to the code. As seen in the code list, when a 'G' is present it indicates grain whisky and 'B' means bourbon. However, the meaning of 'L' is unknown. Initially I thought it might be a liqueur or something similar, but the taste clearly reveals it to be a malt whisky. Even the master at Yurakucho is unaware of this, so if anyone knows, please let me know. Are there other bottles with such notation as well? #Highland Park (HIGHLANDPARK)
