Recent Release: Karuizawa 1979-2013 Official #7752
Bottle #軽井沢(KARUIZAWA)
This was a very rich bottle that captured the best aspects of Karuizawa.
Karuizawa KARUIZAWA 1979-2013 OB #7752 59.9% Ex-Sherry Cask
The aroma has heavy sherry notes, clearly defined sesame oil, Japanese-style dashi (soup stock) with katsuobushi and shiitake mushrooms, mieti (a Japanese term for a certain type of flavor), pencil shavings, and a Japanese-like woodiness with hints of new cask characteristics, bitter chocolate, dry orange, caramelized nuts. It is rich, complex, and heavy, with a smooth mouthfeel that expands into an aromatic richness. The sweetness is concentrated, featuring the sweet and savory glaze of mitarashi (a Japanese sweet), prunes, and other intensely sweet notes. The woodiness is strong with a slightly astringent tannin, katsuobushi dashi, mieti, and leather-like notes from polished hides. It has a full-bodied, thick texture with prominent mieti characteristics and a long, rich finish.
【Very Good】
This is an official Karuizawa bottling, a single cask from the 1979 vintage bottled in 2013. It seems like a bottle that would be traded at an extremely high price, making one feel hesitant to drink it. The rich, complex, and mieti sherry character typical of Karuizawa envelops the entire experience, but there are no unpleasant sulfury or raw notes. The body is thick and very delicious. It has a Japanese-like woodiness with nuances reminiscent of Japanese dashi, as well as an oriental incense-like quality, making it feel exactly like a Japanese malt sherry cask. Moreover, this is the first time I've encountered such a strong sesame oil note in a malt, and there's no doubt that this contributes to its depth. It was a Japanese malt that perfectly fits the description of rich and mieti.
Personally, I often find Karuizawa to have many aspects that pull me in, but there are not many I can fully appreciate. However, this one was without fault in terms of flavor.
This bottle was received through a small bottle exchange with Turoo, and I tasted it at home. Thank you always.
