Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1987-2002 15yo DOUGLAS LAING Old Malt Cask 50%, one of 270 bottles
The aroma is lavish and strong, with intensely concentrated citrus, floral notes, dry barley, and a robust peat with iodine. Upon drinking, it expands from a soft mouthfeel into a concentrated citrus sweetness and acidity with a powdery texture, alongside rich umami reminiscent of seafood dashi. The peat is assertive, and the finish is slightly oily with a long-lasting aftertaste. [Very Good]
This clear-bottle Laphroaig 1987, aged for 15 years, comes from Douglas Laing's Old Malt Cask. From the very first aroma, it strongly and beautifully expresses a concentrated citrus fruitiness characteristic of 1980s Laphroaig. Strong floral nuances and the distinctive iodine-rich peat typical of Laphroaig are also clearly present, but the fruitiness seems to dominate. Upon tasting, there is a concentrated fruity character with a powdery texture, and the balance of sweetness and acidity was pleasant. Additionally, there were assertive notes of seafood dashi umami and strong peat typical of Islay malts. In terms of flavor, the fruitiness was more prominent.
Laphroaig from the late 1980s tends to have more charcoal-like peatiness than the previous fruity characteristics, but many 1987 vintages evoke the old fruity style. This bottle particularly stands out for its pronounced fruitiness over peat, and if blind tasted, it would likely be identified as a good example from the early 1980s. A bottle that would surely delight old Laphroaig enthusiasts.
