【Good/Very Good】
New release for The Whisky Hoop: Highland Park 1988, aged 27 years by Signatory.
Though not explicitly stated, it is a bourbon hogshead.
The initial impression suggests a sherry cask influence with its rich fruitiness and caramelized nut nuances. Slight meaty and sulfurous elements are present but not off-putting, complemented by earthiness and leather notes to add depth. Peat gradually emerges from the background, creating a rich aroma.
On tasting, it begins with a smooth, mature mouthfeel that expands fully. The rich fruitiness, caramel, and nuttiness are evident, with a thick-bodied finish that lingers on the smoky peatiness and sweet depth.
Personally, I suspect it has undergone sherry cask aging, giving this rich and full-bodied Highland Park a sense of the legendary 'North Giant' character from this vintage. It's a delicious malt that evokes classic Highland Park.
While enjoyable now, I believe it could improve further with 10-20 years of aging in the bottle, developing more cohesion, depth, and viscosity.
