A distillery where the house style is strong no matter where it comes from. Fettercairn 1988-2016 27yo Signatory Vintage for The Whisky Hoop #1998 53.4% (One of 137 bottles, Hogshead) The aroma features mild paraffin oil, apricot jam, rich grain notes, mint, and a touch of straw. On the palate, it has viscosity with a slight spiciness, sweetness from orange marmalade and apricot jam, a slightly oily and rich texture with vanilla cream, and the umami of grains. The finish includes cinnamon and oil, lingering long. [Good/Very Good] This Fettercairn 1988, aged for 27 years, was bottled by Signatory for The Whisky Hoop. It was released in January 2017 to members who requested it. While the cask did not show an overt maturity from its 27-year aging period, it exhibited the oily, buttery house style typical of Fettercairn. The rich, savory grain umami was a notable quality. Although I love bottles that emphasize the distillery's distinctive house style, this bottle is also enjoyable for its approachable, less intense house style. I felt the maturity and complexity slowly emerging from deeper layers, suggesting it will only improve with time. It might be best enjoyed after some time has passed since opening. #Fettercairn (FETTERCAIRN)
