As expected from the premium range, the sherry character is distinctly unique.
LAPHROAIG 1989-2010 21yo DOUGLAS LAING OLD & RARE 56.9% - One of 212 bottles, SHERRY HOGSHEAD
The aroma is rich sherry with dried fruits and prunes, bitter chocolate and coffee, spices like clove, sweet herbal liqueur, a touch of meaty notes, strong peat with seaweed elements, and richness.
On the palate, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel expanding into a jammy sweetness and pleasant herbal bitterness from the liqueur, roasted sesame seeds, umami from seafood stock, strong peat with seaweed notes, and a long finish.
[Good/Very Good]
Released by Douglas Laing before they moved to Hunter Laing in 2010, this is a Laphroaig 1989 vintage aged for 21 years.
It's a malt where the rich sherry character and Laphroaig's personality are both strongly present.
However, as expected from Old & Rare, the sherry character is exceptionally rich and offers a diverse range of aromas.
Sweet, concentrated fruits, chocolate and coffee, herbs with bitterness and spices.
These are complemented by Laphroaig's seaweed-like briny notes and strong peat nuances.
As a rich sherry malt, the balance between sweetness and bitterness is well executed.
While not completely blended yet, it's certain that the harmony will develop further and become even more delicious over time.
