Pulteney's spirit seems to pair well with peat, but...
Pulteney PULTENEY 1989-2015 OB Limited Edition 'Lightly Peated' 46%
The aroma features orange, apple, vanilla, a strong cereal note with an unexpected youthful freshness, nuts, and a hint of brine and peat from the depths.
When tasted, it offers a rich sweetness of orange and honey, spiciness with a pronounced saltiness, a strong note of ginkgo, oak, and smoky peat, with an oily finish lingering on the palate.
[Good/Very Good]
This is a limited edition release from Pulteney's official bottling, featuring the 1989 vintage labeled 'Lightly Peated'.
As suggested by its name, it adds a peaty character to Pulteney's usual oily and briny profile.
The bourbon cask influences are well-balanced, and while it's certainly delicious, I found the cereal notes surprisingly youthful, and there was a slight sense of inconsistency overall.
Perhaps this is due to the stronger peat character, which feels a bit out of place for Pulteney.
Overall, it's a malt that feels delicious through sheer force.
Pulteney has such an easily identifiable house style that it might have a fixed image in one's mind.
That said, I find such unfamiliar types less interesting, so I'll try to drink them repeatedly and get more familiar with their characteristics.
