MacDuff MACDUFF 1990-2015 25yo DOUGLAS LAING XTRA OLD PARTICULAR #10954 54.1%
one of 287 bottles, Sherry Butt
The aroma is rich with recent good sherry notes, featuring dried fruits, dried nuts, American cherry, coffee, bitter chocolate, spices and herbs like globe, with a tight impression that surprisingly lacks sweetness. It's rich.
When tasted, the sherry character remains strong with dried fruits, bitter chocolate and coffee. Slight sesame, as expected from the aroma, without excessive sweetness but with a tannic bitterness that tightens it up. Spices like clove, and the finish is long but not sweet.
[Good/Very Good]
This MacDuff 1990, aged for 25 years, comes from Douglas Laing's premium range Extra Old Particular, comparable to Hunter Laing's old & rare releases.
Aged in a Sherry Butt, the entire profile is covered with good sherry notes from start to finish. Although a recent sherry character, there's no unpleasant aspect, and diverse elements such as fruits, coffee, chocolate, spices, and herbs are clearly felt.
When tasted, the flavor composition is similarly diverse as the aroma but surprisingly lacks strong sweetness, with a dry impression due to the tightening tannins.
As expected from a premium range, this is already a highly refined Sherry cask MacDuff. It's intriguing to see how the dryness and nuances of hardness might evolve in the future.
Both Douglas Laing and Hunter Laing clearly distinguish their regular releases from these high-end releases in terms of labeling and pricing, but there's often a clear quality difference between them.
