[Good/Very Good]
This Glen Garioch 1990, 26-year-old Signatory Vintage bottling was released in November 2016 for The Whisky Hoop.
Previously, all cask strength bottles featured wide-mouthed bottles with large corks, which had a poor reputation for both shipping and pouring ease. The corks were also difficult to replace with other manufacturers' products when broken.
After negotiations, this release features significantly larger text and the Hoop mark on a sleek black label. Additionally, it now comes in a taller bottle for easier pouring.
Regarding the core content, Glen Garioch from this era has had several official batch series released, showcasing a stable profile with good nuances from bourbon casks.
Notably, the strong peat character of older house styles is almost absent across many bottles.
This bottling, though unmarked, appears to be from a bourbon hogshead. The aroma reveals orange, vanilla, slight peach notes, honey, and coconut—clear bourbon cask nuances with a strong oak presence. Surprisingly, a faint peat note was also detected.
The flavor fully embodies the positive aspects of bourbon cask maturation, with a notable pineapple-like fruitiness.
The sweetness has depth, and while the oak presence is strong (a personal slight drawback), it's likely to appeal to many. The peat note, similar to the aroma, lingers in the finish, adding charm.
This is a classic example of recent high-quality bourbon cask whisky from Glen Garioch, with the added rarity of a detectable peat note.
