This is a new release of Imperial 1990, aged for 23 years from Jack Wiebers.
The aroma does not have the common bourbon-like green apple fruitiness, but rather a rich fruity note of ripe oranges and apricot jam with a clear grainy presence.
When actually tasted, it has a viscous tropical fruitiness with pineapple-like notes and the umami of grains, with sweetness that has a rich body. It was quite a good new release.
When I think of Imperial 1990, I remember one that was bottled for the inaugural issue of Japanese Whisky Magazine in 2009, which had a mask-like label and also had tropical and viscous characteristics.
This bottle reminded me of that memory.
Although I haven't felt much momentum in recent releases from German bottlers, this time I was pleased to encounter a good new release for the first time in a while.
