Unexpectedly smooth malt.
Springbank SPRINGBANK 1992-2012 20yo for DA MHILE 'THE WEDDING EDITION' 52.8%
one of 261 bottles
The aroma is floral, with a hint of strawberry jam, orange, light peach, vanilla, pleasant barley notes and oak.
When drinking, it is surprisingly soft for its ABV, expanding gradually with a gentle spread of orange and light strawberry jam, moderate barley character, rich sweetness, tannins that gently deepen the flavor, and a briny touch. A smooth, pleasant finish without any off-putting notes.
[Good/Very Good]
This is an organic whisky created by Springbank in 1992, called 'David'. However, this particular bottling was aged for 20 years and released in 2012. It is a private cask, separate from the official David releases, and appears to be a commemorative bottling for the son of someone who commissioned Springbank Distillery to create this organic whisky. Previously, I had tasted the 15-year-old 'Newborn', which was a heavily casked type, so I had some reservations about this 5-year older bottling. However, the color was different from the previous one, suggesting it came from a refill cask.
In terms of aroma, the cask influence was moderate, with the floral elegance expected from Springbank, including a diverse range of fruits like strawberry jam, and a pleasant residual barley note. It also had a characteristic brininess, with thickness but a smooth finish that was enjoyable throughout. Thanks to the gentle cask influence, this bottling clearly showcased Springbank's distinctive house style.
