Bottle #カリラ(CAOL ILA)
It's a happiness to be able to drink such a commemorative bottle after several years. Caol Ila 1996-2009 Official Bottling 'Feis Ile 2009' #19313 58% European Oak Cask, Former Sherry Casks The aroma features apricot jam and orange marmalade, chlorine, vanilla, nuts, a cool metallic note, sea breeze, and strong smoke. Upon drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel that expands into a spicy kick, carrying the rich sweetness of apricot jam, slightly briny notes, subtle dashi and barley umami, with a smoky, pleasant finish. [Good/Very Good] Bottled for the 2009 Islay Festival, this is Caol Ila 1996, aged approximately 13 years. At 58% ABV, it's a notably high proof. The tasting notes from 2009 mentioned a strong spicy kick, which I also felt this time. However, other elements are more clearly defined now compared to the previous tasting—distinct smokiness, concentrated fruits, shared characteristics with Ardbeg such as chlorine and cool metallic notes, along with dashi and barley umami. I believe this is due to the bottle aging, which has smoothed out prominent elements and allowed for a more diverse aroma profile. While it's meant to be enjoyed at the festival, being able to drink it over five years later is a wonderful thing. Grateful indeed.
