This represents the recent direction of delicious new releases. Dalwhinnie DAILUAINE 1997-2014 16yo Douglas Laing Old Particular for JIS #DL 55.2%, one of 120 bottles, bourbon barrel The aroma is strong with notes of orange, green apple, pear, creamy, fruit cake, vanilla, good barley character. Upon drinking, it expands from a surprisingly smooth mouthfeel with the same diverse fruity characteristics as the aroma, slightly estery, refined sweetness and a pleasant finish. [Good/Very Good] This Dalwhinnie 1997, aged for 16 years, was bottled by Douglas Laing Old Particular specifically for Japan Import System. Similar to the recent Dalmore release, this series was originally intended as a diluted version but was bottled at cask strength here. The nose evokes the often-felt green apple, citrus, and vanilla creaminess of bourbon barrel maturation, reminiscent of a fruit cake nuance. The flavor is similarly fruity with a well-balanced refined sweetness, which was impressive. The presence of aging character despite the relatively short maturation period may be due to the rapid maturation from bourbon barrels. In recent releases, there are many of this type that offer high completion with shorter aging periods and affordable prices. While the prevalence of similar types is a slight drawback, this bottle also demonstrated high completion.
