Glenelgin GLENELGIN 1999 15yo THE SCOTCH MALT WHISKY SOCIETY 85.30 56.6%
One of 321 bottles, Refill Bourbon Hogshead
The aroma is rich and warm, with apricot jam, ripe oranges, pleasant woodiness and tree sap, richness. Upon drinking, it starts with a soft mouthfeel that expands into a rich aroma of apricot, orange, pineapple, oil, and a faint viscosity. The thick, sweet flavor is complemented by the oak woodiness and tannins, creating a deep taste. The finish is long, with rich, thick-bodied notes of concentrated fruits and spiciness.

The aroma carries a sense of ripeness and concentrated jam-like fruitiness, with woody and tree sap-like characteristics that assert themselves more than the aging years. A warm nuance envelops the entire profile.
When tasted, it has an approachable mouthfeel that is common in recent Society Malts, expanding into a rich aroma. The diverse and intense fruity notes, along with a rich sweetness, were impressive.
There was no sign of under-ripeness. Given the flavor achieved after 15 years of aging, it is speculated to have matured in a bourbon cask that allows components to come through easily. However, there was no excessive oaky or raw woodiness, nor any bitterness.
In fact, it seems different from the typical bourbon cask nuances of recent years, and feels like a warm malt that might be a vatting with refill sherry casks.
Even when blind tasted, the quality was so good that it would not first be thought of as a 1999 vintage, 15-year-old Speyside malt.
