New Release: Balblair 1999-2016 Official Whisky Exchange #1712 51.9%
Bottle #バルブレア(BALBLAIR)
A rare Balblair in a Barrique Sherry cask.
Balblair BALBLAIR 1999-2016 OB for THE WHISKY EXCHANGE #1712 51.9%
The aroma features rich sherry notes from recent European oak casks, bitter chocolate, caramel, black sugar mochi, pronounced woodiness, and a luxurious profile.
On the palate, it is powerful and slightly stimulating with a concentrated, chewy texture. Notes of plum jam, chocolate, and caramel sauce present a flat yet strong sweetness, balanced by tightening woodiness, tannins, meaty elements, and a rich, long finish. [Good/Very Good, Interesting]
This official single cask Balblair 1999 was bottled for The Whisky Exchange, aged approximately 17 years.
I cannot recall ever seeing a Balblair official bottling with such a deep color.
Although not stated on the bottle, it exhibits a pronounced sherry character, particularly influenced by European oak sherry casks.
Concentrated notes of dark fruits, bitter chocolate, and black sugar mochi with strong woodiness from the cask were well-presented.
While the texture is forceful and somewhat rough, the sweetness is also strong, with a clear tannic structure. Surprisingly balanced.
It feels as if the roughness and bold claims were forcefully combined, yet it is already well-crafted and enjoyable at this stage.
Such whiskies often develop roundness and cohesion after over 20 years, potentially becoming a beautifully balanced high-level expression.
