The aroma is elegant, with notes of green apple, fresh grapefruit juice, vanilla, a touch of cream, and a gentle maltiness with some youthful character. The palate is smooth, with lemon, vanilla, a subtle sweetness, citrus acidity, the umami of barley, a spicy kick, and oak tannins that add depth to the flavor. [Good/Very Good]
This year's bottling of Scapa 2001 from GM.
The aroma suggests bourbon cask aging with elements like green apple, citrus, and vanilla, along with a hint of youthfulness in the malt.
Upon tasting, it didn't have the creaminess I expected from the aroma, but instead offered a modest sweetness with a balanced citrus acidity. The oak tannins then stepped in, adding depth and preventing the whisky from feeling one-dimensional.
Despite not being a heavily oaked type, it managed to avoid monotony and provided a rich depth. However, it wasn't an intense oak type; rather, it felt well-balanced and skillfully composed through the vatting and dilution process.
