JIS has an amazing eye for quality. Glengoyne GLENGOYNE 2001-2016 15yo HUNTER LAING Old Malt Cask for JIS #12352 58.8% one of 187 bottles, REFILL HOGSHEAD The aroma is strong with lemonade, vanilla, a touch of coconut, rich oak, good barley notes, and natural aging. On the palate, it's spicy but not harsh, with a smooth mouthfeel expanding into lemonade, vanilla, coconut, sweet richness, oak depth enhancing the flavor, barley umami, and a rich finish without any lingering bitterness. [Good/Very Good] This is a single cask Glengoyne from 2001, aged for 15 years, bottled by Douglas Laing for JIS. While OMC typically sticks to 50%, this one is exceptionally bottled at cask strength. Though not overly complex in aging, it's clearly a well-crafted malt from the 2000s distillation. It carries the quality of a good bourbon cask with vanilla and coconut notes, yet lacks any raw woodiness. It has a pleasant barley sweetness without harshness, with the cask strength's rich sweetness balanced by oak tannins. The lemonade-like nuance in both aroma and flavor was particularly striking. It has a good cask character without artificial flavoring, giving the impression of naturally aged malt. While Glengoyne is often associated with sherry casks (which are currently popular), this bottle feels like a fortunate choice of a young, pure malt that just happened to be in a bourbon cask. JIS truly selects quality without following trends.
