The young sherry notes were not bad.
GlenDronach GLENDRONACH 2003-2014 11yo OB for La Maison du Whisky #4067 54.1%
one of 718 bottles, Oloroso Sherry Puncheon
The aroma features youthful sherry notes with plum, blood orange, a strong barley character with oak and cinnamon, and diluted caramel sauce. Upon tasting, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel before expanding into a powerful spicy flavor with plum, apricot, strong barley notes with umami, oak, and a light sweetness with good astringency.
【Good/Very Good】
This is an official new release of GlenDronach 2003, aged for 11 years, bottled for La Maison du Whisky in France. Although it is stated to have been matured in an Oloroso Sherry Puncheon, the color appears lighter than typical for a GlenDronach sherry cask due to its relatively short aging period of 11 years.
From the aroma to the flavor, it exhibits recent-style sherry characteristics without off-flavors, with a notable fruity nuance of plum and apricot. The youthful barley notes are clearly present, offering a rich umami that makes you feel like you're drinking a barley-based spirit. However, as a sherry-matured malt, it lacks viscosity and intense sweetness, with a relatively short finish.
While slightly spicy, it is not overly sharp. Despite being matured in a cask for a short period, the lack of underdevelopment is impressive. In a way, it's like a lightly pickled malt where the raw material flavors remain.
I believe this is one of the acceptable finishes for a sherry single cask maturation.
