GlenDronach GLENDRONACH 2003-2015 11yo OB for THE WHISKY HOOP #5551 58.0%
one of 682 bottles, Oloroso Sherry Puncheon
The aroma has a sherry feel and a strong fresh barley note, mixed dried fruits including ripe apricot and raisin, with slightly caramelized nuts. When drinking, it spreads gradually and becomes slightly spicy, but the recent sherry feel is pleasant without any unpleasantness. The sweetness of apricot jam, savory barley notes, and a textured mouthfeel with a pleasant aftertaste. [Good/Very Good]
This is an official GlenDronach 2003, 11-year-old whisky bottled by The Whisky Hoop and released in March this year. It comes from a single Oloroso sherry puncheon, and while the price isn't high, it's somewhat worrying that such a limited number might sell out quickly. Regarding the content, I was slightly concerned about its short maturation period, but it pleasantly surprised me in a good way. The aroma isn't complex, but there's almost no sign of immaturity, and the sherry-derived fruitiness and caramel-like notes coexist harmoniously with a fresh barley feel. Similarly, in taste, it has recent nuances but the pleasant sherry feel and savory barley notes are enjoyable together without any unpleasant aspects. Short-matured sherries often mask young, immature barley notes with sherry, sometimes giving a floating cask feel. However, this Dornan seems to have a balanced sherry cask expression, so the barley's savory notes aren't masked. While not fully integrated, they coexist without conflict, creating an enjoyable image. Additionally, I personally appreciated the absence of the clay-like nuances often found in recent Dornans. This type, where sherry and barley notes coexist without being forceful, is easy to drink even when young, serving as a model for the deliciousness of young sherry casks.
